National Biocontainment Laboratory

A critical part of the National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease at Wallaceville, Ngāti Toa Rangātira Upper Hutt, is the newly completed National Biocontainment Laboratory. This multipurpose biosecurity response facility provides a world leading containment laboratory where bacteriologists, virologists, immunologists and epidemiologists specialising in animal and human health can coordinate scientific work for human and animal disease emergencies and biological threats to Aotearoa New Zealand. New Zealand has operated a laboratory on the Ngāti Toa Rangātira site for over 100 years, providing diagnostics and research for diseases of cattle, sheep, deer, pigs, birds, horses, bees, and fish. The new laboratory is designed to safely contain dangerous disease organisms such as anthrax, avian flu, polio and Covid-19.
